Conformation

Conformation describes the structure and physical traits of a dog and how well they conform to the breed standard. In conformation shows, dogs compete to earn points or certification toward a championship. Points are awarded based on the number of dogs in the competition. The dogs are first judged against others of their breed or variety, based on AKC breed standards, and Best of Breed is chosen. The Best of Breed winners go on to compete within specific groups, which are based on breed type (Terrier, Toy, Working, Sporting, Hound, Non-Sporting, Herding). Finally, the Group winners compete for the coveted Best In Show.
